A Real Prairie Dog Hunt

I first got into prairie dog hunting about 8 years ago when a real good friend took me out and showed me the ropes. I was used to hunting jack rabbits as a teen and I kind of expected the same. It was a real change and challenge to take the long range shots but I found I really enjoyed it. It has been a benefit to all my shooting and hunting to know how to control my shots better.

I had been out on a few prairie dog hunts before, but we had heard about Casper, WY and thought it was time to see what all the hub-bub was about. After an 8 hour drive, we rolled into the motel and had dinner. We awoke to a nice summer day and headed out to a couple ranches that we contacted. I honestly couldn't believe the amount of targets everywhere! I can see how these pests can cause problems for the ranchers. We pulled into a spot that was thick with mounds and set up. After a couple hundred rounds from the 22-250 and several breaks to let the barrels cool, we decided to leave the rest (They were still running around everywhere) . Then it was on to other spots and many more dogs.

Day 2 found us at a different ranch. After meeting the cowboy for an escort to the area with the most problem, we took aim at many targets, varying from 25 yards out to 1500. It was fun to see just how far everyone could shoot and still hit. As the immediate area slowed down, we took a lunch break and got a little rest. Then me and one of my buddies decided to take a little stroll up a draw that was about 6 feet deep. We walked to the end and popped our heads out to see prairie dogs as close as 20 feet! I almost felt guilty taking shots and hearing the pop so loud. These critters had no clue where we were or what to do! It was quite a sight to see the action that close. After about a half hour and a few good laughs, We headed back to the trucks and headed home. This was truly a real prairie dog hunt and we didn't even scratch the surface of the area out there. I'll always remember that hunt and the time spent with all my good friends out on the prairie.
